Amharic is a Semitic language spoken in Ethiopia, with approximately 22 million speakers. It is the second-most spoken Semitic language after Arabic. Amharic has a long literary history and is the official language of Ethiopia. It is also widely spoken in neighboring Eritrea and among Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora communities.
