Viking metal music on the radio

Viking metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that incorporates elements of Nordic folk music and mythology. It emerged in the early 1990s and gained popularity in Scandinavian countries, as well as in Germany and other parts of Europe. The genre is characterized by its use of traditional folk instruments such as flutes, fiddles, and horns, along with distorted electric guitars and aggressive vocals.

Some of the most popular artists in the Viking metal genre include Bathory, Amon Amarth, and Enslaved. Bathory, formed in 1983 in Sweden, is often credited with pioneering the genre with their early albums, which featured lyrics and imagery inspired by Norse mythology. Amon Amarth, formed in 1992 in Sweden, has become one of the most successful bands in the genre, known for their powerful, melodic sound and lyrics about Viking culture and history. Enslaved, formed in 1991 in Norway, has been noted for their experimental approach to the genre, incorporating elements of progressive and black metal.

There are several radio stations that play Viking metal, including Gimme Metal and Metal Devastation Radio, which both feature a mix of metal subgenres, including Viking metal. Additionally, some countries, such as Norway and Finland, have dedicated metal stations that may include Viking metal in their programming.
