Indie folk is a subgenre of indie rock and folk music that emerged in the 1990s and is characterized by its emphasis on acoustic instruments, introspective lyrics, and stripped-down production. The genre is known for its melancholic and emotive sound, often featuring fingerpicked guitar and banjo, harmonica, and sparse percussion.

Some of the most popular indie folk artists include Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine, The Tallest Man on Earth, and Sufjan Stevens. Bon Iver's 2007 debut album, "For Emma, Forever Ago," is considered a landmark in the genre and features intricate harmonies, haunting melodies, and raw, emotional songwriting. Fleet Foxes, known for their lush harmonies and pastoral themes, released their self-titled debut album in 2008 to critical acclaim.

Iron & Wine, the moniker of singer-songwriter Sam Beam, has released a string of critically acclaimed albums that blend folk, country, and indie rock. His 2004 album "Our Endless Numbered Days" features a minimalist production and introspective lyrics that delve into themes of love and loss. The Tallest Man on Earth, the stage name of Swedish musician Kristian Matsson, is known for his intricate fingerpicking style and poetic lyrics. His 2010 album, "The Wild Hunt," features a more expansive sound that incorporates piano and electric guitar.

Sufjan Stevens is a prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his eclectic and experimental approach to folk music. His 2005 album, "Illinois," is a concept album that explores the history and mythology of the state of Illinois through a mix of folk, indie rock, and orchestral arrangements.

Some of the radio stations that feature indie folk music include Folk Alley, KEXP's The Roadhouse, and WXPN's Folk Show. Folk Alley features a mix of traditional and contemporary folk music, while The Roadhouse features a range of Americana, blues, and folk music. WXPN's Folk Show showcases the best in contemporary and traditional folk, roots, and acoustic music.
