Hip hop music is a relatively new genre in Mongolia that emerged in the early 2000s, influenced by Western hip hop culture. The music initially gained popularity among young Mongolians in urban areas but has since spread to become a mainstream genre across the country. One of the most popular hip hop artists in Mongolia is MC Mong, who has been active since the mid-2000s. He infuses traditional Mongolian elements into his music and often addresses social issues in his lyrics. Other notable artists include Nisvanis, who blend Mongolian traditional instruments with hip hop beats, and Dandii, who infuses pop elements into his music. Hip hop music can be heard on several radio stations in Mongolia, including Ulaanbaatar FM, which blends hip hop with other popular genres such as pop and rock. Another popular station is Mongol Radio, which features a mix of international and local hip hop artists. Additionally, there are several online radio stations that exclusively play hip hop music such as Valley FM. Despite the challenges faced by the Mongolian hip hop community, such as a lack of financial support from the government and a limited audience, the genre continues to thrive and evolve. The hip hop community has also produced documentary films and music videos that showcase the genre’s unique Mongolian flavour.
