Hip hop music has had a unique journey in Japan, with the genre taking on a distinct local flavor. Japanese hip hop artists have been successful in blending traditional Japanese elements with hip hop music, creating a new cultural space in the process. One of the earliest Japanese hip hop artists was DJ Krush, who began his career in the early 1990s. Other early pioneers of the Japanese hip hop scene included artists like Muro, King Giddra and Scha Dara Parr. Today, some of the most popular Japanese hip hop artists include the likes of Ryo-Z, Verbal and KOHH. Numerous radio stations in Japan have a dedicated hip hop genre music programming. Japan FM Network - JFN is one of Japan's major broadcast networks that feature a dedicated hip hop channel: J-Wave. Other radio stations such as FM802, InterFM, and J-WAVE also feature hip hop genre music programming. J-Hip hop, as it is referred to in Japan, is a genre that has gradually grown in popularity over the years. With a unique combination of Japanese and hip hop culture, it is no surprise that this genre is now enjoyed and appreciated both inside and outside of Japan.
