Samaoui, Gnaoua Radio

Samaoui, Gnaoua Radio

Initially a rite of trance and possession, Gnaoui art has become world music capable of merging with the most demanding music, including jazz. The “Tagnaouite” has had universal popularity in recent years thanks in particular to the Gnaouas festival in Essaouira. It has become — like reggae — more than music, a way of living together, even a vision of the world. The vocation of the music of the Gnaouas is originally a liberation of the speech of Islamized sub-Saharan slaves on Moroccan soil. The possession ritual is a musical crescendo at an increasingly lively tempo, accompanied by the fumigation of benzoin, with approximately six distinct stations recognizable by their chromatic values: black, blue, red, white, green. and yellow. Today, this largely creolized culture has opened up to the world by becoming “secularized”, which makes it very attractive to many musicians, including African-Americans in particular.
