Radio Sud Besançon is a French local radio station broadcast in the agglomeration of Besançon on the FM band with the frequency 101.8 MHz. It was created in 1983 by Hamid Hakkar.
Radio Sud Besançon was created in the Cité de l'Escale, a transit city on the outskirts of Besançon which, from the 1960s, welcomed Algerian immigrants, all from the same Aurès region. The Cité de l'Escale, which had no public facilities, being in some respects described as a slum, lived apart from city life and had a bad reputation in the rest of the city. The inhabitants, wishing to give life to the district and give it a better image, created in 1982 an association called ASCE (Association Sportive et Culturelle de l'Escale). One of its founders, Hamid Hakkar, who is also a trainer for young people in difficulty, then had the idea of creating a radio station to get in touch with the rest of the population of Besançon. The first broadcasts of Radio Sud were broadcast in January 1983. They quickly achieved great success in the City. In 1984, the station separated from the ASCE and created its own association called Collectif Radio Sud. Radio Sud was recognized by the CSA in 1985 and received its first subsidies in 1986-1987. Cramped in its premises, the radio then moved to the district of Saint-Claude until 1995 then to that of Planoise where it was still located until 2007. Currently, after the construction of new premises, Radio Sud is 2 hours from rue Bertrand Russell, still in the Planoise district, in Besançon.
