Being located in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a region of great cultural and linguistic diversity, Estéreo Istmo serves various ethnic groups such as Zapotecs, Mixes, Huaves, Zoques and Chontales.
As Pemex did not have the necessary resources or experience to keep a radio station in operation, in 1987 Estéreo Istmo began to be operated by IMER. However, the transmission antenna still remains within the petrochemical facilities.
